Modelling Switch-Behaviour of Own Car vs. Public Transport Modes for Work & to Study Trips Case Study: Tripoli - Libya
Journal Article

Abstract:

This research deals with estimating the likely switch of own car and private vehicles modes

users to public transport modes in the main cities as Tripoli Capital city of Libya due to

reduced travel time of all trips influenced by travel costs through the introducing the public

transport modes such as public buses and increasing cost of car parking. The data on other

factors (variables) that could potentially reason a model switch of from own cars and private

transport to public transport were collected through a survey (questionnaire) with a specified

preference approach. Mode-switch models to describe the switch of behaviour of own car

operators to public transport are developed. A binary logit regression model was used to

assessment the transport displacement model for work and study trips. Mode-switch

likelihood curves have also, been developed to serve as a user-friendly tool to analyse the

likely model-switch for a variety of variables. One way to achieve this objective is by

establishing reserved public transport lanes on main urban Tripoli city roads. The providing of

private road lanes will reduce the level of road traffic congestion and this may effect in a

switch of all or some private transport mode users to public transport modes.

Key words: Own car, Public transport modes, logit model, Travel time, Travel cost, parking

cost and switch probabilities.

PROBABILITIES OF POLICY SHIFT TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT Case study: Tripoli - Libya
Conference paper

Abstract— Private cars are important for most household

activities in Libyan societies. They give comfort and

convenience to the users to go to different destinations without

affecting other users. However, the total number of private car

and private transport namely taxi and micro buses on the road

increases and causes many problems such as traffic congestion,

accidents, air and noise pollution. This study aims to identify

the factors to support private car drivers shifting to public

transport system (PT) and to develop model shift from private

car to public transport in order to formulate policies to achieve

this. The study has been carried out in Tripoli city authority

areas among private car users who live in the areas with lack

of private transport and no public transport (PT) services. A

questionnaire survey was carried out to study the potential

reduction of private cars on road through optimal use of

suitable public transportation system in order to reduce traffic

problems. The probability of policy car drivers shifting to

public transport was examined based on scenario several

options such as reduce and improve in public transport travel

time, travel cost and car parking. This study has recommended

shift level of level 113 (it means that parking cost will be

increased by Libyan Dinar (LYD) 0.5 as level 1 (low level),

travel time to be improved by 10% as level 1 (low level) and

travel cost to be reduced by at least 50% as level 3 (middle

level)) to be implemented if the targeted PT shift around 60%

to be achieved. The result has shown a logical implementation

to both of the travellers and operators. Statistical Package for

Why Many People Wish To Use Public Transport System: A Case Study in Tripoli-Libya
Journal Article

Abstract

In many cities today, owning a car has become an important and

dominant mode of transport. Increasing dominance of own cars as a mode

of transport is due to its inherent advantages associated with its usage. In

Tripoli, Libya due to rapid increase in car usage associated with poor public

transport system has resulted in an increase of traffic congestion, accidents

and lack of parking spaces. This study aims to identify the factors

preventing owning cars from shifting to public transport system (PT). And

to develop model shift from owning cars to public transport in order to

formulate policies to achieve this. A policy to enhance public transport

system usage and control car ownership simultaneously has become

necessary for solving traffic congestion problems. A questionnaire survey

was carried out on users of transport in Tripoli such as own car, taxis,

microbuses and coaches drivers (n = 900). The probability of car drivers

shifting to public transport was examined based on scenario of several

options such as reduction in public transport travel time and travel cost.

Reduction in total travel time and cost for public transport mode emerged as

the most important elements in attracting car users towards using public

transport system. Logistic regression technique has been used to analyze the

factors that impact users to switch their trips to public transportation

alternatives. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 19 and

Switching Reasons to Public Transport System in Tripoli, Libya
Conference paper

ABSTRACT

Many Arab countries are starting to suffer from traffic congestion in their capitals cities, as

a consequence of continued increase in car ownership, current public transport vehicles

namely taxi, coaches and microbuses users and also lack of car parks. Tripoli, the capital

city of Libya where most of commuters prefer to use private cars, which is 88% of the city

traffic volume for doing work, study and shopping trips and one of these Arabic cities.

Government statistical data on the city for 2009 revealed that out of the total 945,203

vehicles comprised of 743,796 private cars and 47,031 units of taxis, coaches and

microbuses. In this study, traffic volume characteristics on three Tripoli's main entrances

namely, the eastern entrance covers Tajora (Al-Bive), the western entrance covers the AlGiran entrance and the southern entrance covers the Al-Gabis, Airport Road and Al-Hadaba

(Salah Al-Din) entrances were evaluated. The increase number of private cars and public

transport vehicles in the last ten years has resulted in traffic congestion. Field survey and

questionnaire study were carried out in Tripoli area in summer 2015 to explore the potential

reduction of private cars usage on road through optimal use of suitable public transportation

system. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 19, Excel software and

logistic regression method were used to analyse these questionnaires. As a result, Tripoli

roads network users need to change and encourage usage of public transportation system as

public buses and rapid buses into the city.

Traffic Safety for Bus Rapid Transit Mode, Case Study: Tripoli-Libya
Journal Article

ABSTRACT

This study reviews the Public Transportation (PT) Systems and the opportunities and requirements applied

in Libya. Beginning with the definition of public transport systems and their functions and areas of applied and

advanced systems for public transport and advanced systems for traffic management, systems and operations of

transport vehicles and advanced systems to control private vehicle and safety, with a discussion of the

importance of each of them, this paper discusses the requirements of the application of Bus Rapid Transit

(BRT) systems in mass with focus placed on the importance of developing an outline plan for the public

transport systems. The concept master plan and the options available in Tripoli shall be discussed to develop its

map of structural public transportation systems and recommend consideration of the possible adoption of a map

structure developed in the advanced countries and some developing countries in this area, with their adaptations

depending on the circumstances of Tripoli. It also concludes with the need to establish a permanent institution

representing the parties involved, including the public sectors, academia; and vested in the institutions

responsible for managing, directing, and the preparation of a strategic plan for public transport systems,

including the development of the master plan for those systems. The study recommends starting with pilot

projects carefully selected by an explanatory expansion in the application.

Logistic Regression Models to Forecast Travelling Behaviour in Tripoli City,
Journal Article

Abstract— Transport modes are very important to Libyan’s Tripoli residents for their daily trips. However, the total number of own car and private transport namely taxi and micro buses on the road increases and causes many problems such as traffic congestion, accidents, air and noise pollution. These problems then causes other related phenomena to the travel activities such as delay in trips, stress and frustration to motorists which may affect their productivity and efficiency to both workers and students. Delay may also increase travel cost as well inefficiency in trips making if compare to other public transport users in some Arabs cities. Switching to public transport (PT) modes alternatives such as buses, light rail transit and underground train could improve travel time and travel costs. INCREASED USE OF OWN CAR IN TRIPOLI - LIBYA
Conference paper

ABSTRACT:

The own car is the first most common mode of transportation using in Tripoli. About 66 % Tripoli’s

resident prefer and used own car for all trips propose and 34 % who’s prefer to use the private

transport such as private taxi and private buses namely (micro bus with capacity from 8 to 16 person)

in Tripoli city. The rapid increase in the use of own car model transport with the poor public transport

system in Tripoli as caused acute traffic jam, accidents, environmental impacts such as (air pollution

and noise) and land use damage for building more new car parks. In this paper, policy aimed at

discouraging the use own car and private transport in the Tripoli city. Also this paper research to

identify factors that prevent own car and private transport users from used public transport so that

logical policies could be formulated to support greater use of public transport. A survey was carried

out on users of own cars and private transport namely (private taxi and private buses) (n= 900).

Descriptive and analytical transportation issue is the main research methodology in this paper. The

most important variables found likely to support the use of public transport were reduced travel time;

reduce the distance from home to public transport stop and suitable fares. In conclusion for the

traveller to change from private vehicles to public transport, proper incentives need to be provided for

better performance.

ABSTRACT

Most of the Arabic capitals cities are suffering from severe traffic congestion as a result of

continuing increase in both road users and private vehicle ownerships. Tripoli capital city of Libya

is one of these cities where majority of the travellers prefer to using private transportation mode

namely own cars which is 88% of the traffic volume for work, study and shop trips. Government

statistical data on the city for October 2009 revealed that out of the total 945,203 vehicles

comprised of 743,796 own cars and 47,031 units of taxis and micro buses. This paper evaluates

traffic characteristics on the three main entrances into the city; the southern entrance covers the AlGabis, Airport Road and Al-Hadaba (Salah Al-Din) entrances; the west entrance includes Al-Giran

entrance; and the east covers Tajora (Al-Bive) entrance. The entrance routes lead to several

downtown roads and main streets in the city, such as two way Omar Al-Mukhtar Street, Mizran

Street, First of September Street at the city centre and Al-Fatah Street along the Tripoli city port.

There are also other old and modern streets traverses in the city centre. As the number of private

cars usage increased, the traffic congestion got more acute. Tripoli streets need to expedite and

support the use of public transportation system namely bus, train and light rail transit into the city.

A questionnaire survey was carried out in Tripoli area to explore the potential reduction of private

cars usage on road through optimal use of suitable public transportation system.

Existing Transportation Scenario In Tripoli, Libya
Journal Article

Abstract: Own cars are the most common mode of transport in Tripoli, Libya. About 66% of

Tripoli’s residents prefer to use their own cars and only 34% resort to depend on public transports

namely taxi, coaches and microbuses for their transportation activities in the city centre area. Rapid

increase in own cars’ usage, coupled with no public transport system have caused problems such as

acute traffic congestion, an increase in road accidents, deterioration in environmental well being and

unbalanced land use characteristics. A questionnaire survey was carried out in Tripoli to address the

first two of these problems. About 900 respondents were analysed where their needs were observed

and expectations explored. The study has found that the variables to support the use of public

transport system are the reductions in travel time, distance travelled and reasonable fares. The study

also identifies some factors that prevent the users of private cars, taxi, coaches and microbuses from

using the public transportation system, in order to enable the researcher to suggest and formulate

logical policies to support better use of public transportation system.
